Playoffs
Miners and Jr. Raiders squared off in a best of five playoff starting last weekend. The home team swept the first two in Calgary followed by a Miners home win. Raiders won the series 3 - 1 with yesterdays road win. Kinnear and Gelinas finished strong offensively with 6 playoff goals apiece. Lorentz had 4, R. Thompson 3, Lehman and Anderson had a pair. Miners have some key veterans age out this year however a strong group of 1991 to 1993 returning players bodes well for next season, see you then.
End of the regular season
July 13/2011 the Jr. Miners hosted the Jr. Eclipse at Servus resulting in an 8 - 7 win for the visitors. Big game with playoff implications the Miners will now face the Raiders. Not a lot of penalties but the Eclipse were able to get 4 special teams goals, while the Miners had 2 on the PP. Plenty of offense with the Miners outshooting with 47 shots. Douville, Turner, Mackenzie, the Thompson Twins, Gelinas, and Wolfe all got singles. Davis and Anderson had a pair of helpers each. See you in the playoffs.
All Miners
July 9, 2011 at Servus the Jr. Miners hosted the Sr. Miners with the home team winning 16 - 12. After relatively low offensive production of late, the Jr's were able to fill the net. Even after 2 periods, a 5 - 1 third for the Jr's was the difference. R. Thompson led with 5 including 3 on the PP, Poirier, Mackenzieand Davis got a pair, Deans, Turner, Kinnear and Gelinas got singles. Zwack got the win with 20 saves.
Local Juniors Battle
July 6, 2011 the Eclipse hosted the Jr. Miners at Bill Hunter resulting in a 10 - 7 win for the home team. A hot summer night with the sound of thunder in the background, the old Jasper Place arena as it has for half a century witnessed another classic game. Amongst the crowd were many local lacrosse legends (like me), remembering our glory days on the same floor decades earlier. The first period was low key ending in a 2 - 2 draw. The secong belonged to the Eclipse who scored 5, another draw in the third. A plethora of fisticuffs in the third where a number of former Blues and Team Alberta players were able to get reaquainted and spend some quality time together in the box. R. Thompson and Lorentz each scored a pair, Kinnear, Mackenzie and Sullivan netted singles.
Jr. Miners versus Jr. Raiders
The second game of the Calgary trip, July 3, 2011 again in front of a packed house at Fish Creek Arena saw the Raiders defeat the Miners 11 - 4. Raiders took 5 majors in the first period, Miners were undeterred by the opposing stick work and were able to finish the first ahead on 2 PP goals. The second and third periods belonged to the home team, even though they were outshot more than 2 to 1 by the Miners. Zwack and Kavalinas shared the cage with Gelinas getting a pair, R. Thompson and Turner had singles.
Jr. Miners versus Jr. Mounties
In the first of a back to back road swing in Calgary, July 2/2011 in front of a full house at Fish Creek the two Jr's battled to a 5 - 5 draw. A fast, physical, penalty filled game, ended the first in a tie. Miners got in to some penalty trouble in the second and were held scoreless but it was the Mounties that filled the sin bin in the third as the Miners came back to tie. Kavalinas was solid as the Miners were outshot. Turner, Sullivan, Amendt, Mackenzie and Gelinas got singles.
Jr. Miners versus Jr. Eclipse
June 22/11 at Servus Place Miners hosted the Eclipse with a 7 - 5 victory for the visiting team. On the first full day of summer, another low scoring affair between these two. Maybe it was the hot summer night heat, rink full of poplar fluff but more likely outstanding goaltending at both ends that kept goals down. At times the pace was slow, like watching postal workers walk the picket line, but for the most part a fast, relatively clean game, special teams only factoring in on two goals aside. Richard Thompson got a pair, Eric Turner, Josh Sullivan and Kyle Crowley had singles.
Big road win for Miners in Calgary
June 18/2011 SAIT Arena Calgary the Jr. Miners defeated the Jr. Mounties 14 - 7. An intense, physical game the Miners outscored their opponents 5 - 3 in the first. Things heated up in the second with the Mounties drawing 11 penalties, which the Miners capitalized on with 6 goals. All around team effort with most of the roster in on 32 total points. Scoring for the Miners, R. Thompson and Kinnear were dominant with 5 and 3 apiece. Gelinas, Wolfe, Davis, Lehman, Sullivan and Lorenz got singles.
